Coming to America: U.S. readies for Papal Visit

She did start it...

Hillary Clinton a victim of her own words--again. This time it wasn't sniper fire, but her talking about being a sniper with a duck in her sights. In lambasting Obama over his comments that some voters in Pennsylvania cling to guns in anger, she mentioned that she shot at ducks and was taught to use a gun way back when in Scranton, PA.

But to some in media circles, her comments appeared to be in direct conflict with policy choices in the past, including supporting tougher gun control measures.

Reporters asked Clinton about it, but she said the last time she went to church or fired a gun isn't relevant .. "We can answer that some other time," Clinton said at a press conference... "This is about what people feel is being said about them. I went to church on Easter. I mean, so?"

Supporting Clinton's candidacy appears to require a certain sense of imagination and creativity. Imagination over the past and creativity in pretending you're a friend of the type of voters you don't like. You just have to hope those voters dislike your opponent Obama more than you.

Then again, it could just be the liquor talking. Hey, it was a Saturday night..

THE MEDIA HAS ATTACKED, BUT MAYBE OBAMA WAS RIGHT

I live in Pennsylvania, for better or worse. Barack Obama has seen a lot of my home state. He sees the same rural towns I see, the same dilapidated cities.. The Capitol city of Harrisburg is filled with run down buildings that haven't seen care for decades.. The city of brotherly love is filled with violence and sky rocketing crime.. The rural towns of Pennsylvania are filled with patriotic Americans that work hard, and have a little fear about the future.

Barack Obama gave us his interpretation about the Keystone state: "You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." (-More on the Huffington Post)

Barack Obama today said he didn't comment as well as he could have. Hillary Clinton has already latched on to his commentary as proof that Obama is out of touch.. Proof that he is snobby. An elitist. Proof he doesn't understand Pennsylvania.

Maybe he does.

While the rest of the country begins to descend into economic stress, many parts of Pennsylvania have said collectively: Welcome to the club. Politicians in big cities and in Harrisburg have long ignored true problems in the state.. The job market has evaporated in many towns. Roads are at their worst in several areas.. Entire counties depressed. Teenage drinking and deaths are high in the coal region.. The steel cities aren't made of steel.. While some parts of the state struggle to rebound, others remain locked in their self-made rut. You reap what you sow.

Barack Obama's particular about himself in Pennsylvania was especially poignant: "Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism." The San Francisco audience laughed.

But Barack Obama is right. I have been doing some independent research myself. There are a few people in a group that seem unlikely to ever vote for Barack Obama, let alone someone that is not white. It's just true. It's simply true. Ed Rendell, you were right. There is a small segment of America that won't soon shed its past of bigotry.

The town of Hazleton, PA, was in the news for the past few years because of its proposals for ordinances against illegal immigrants. Many in Northeastern and Central PA have become fed up. But some aren't sure with what.

America is going through an interesting period of time. The 20th Century was clearly the American century. But we, as a country, outsourced ourselves. We moved into the 21st Century not as the American version, but instead as the Dependent Century. We depend on China to give us materials.. many times they are recalled. We don't depend on independent farmers anymore, instead we rely on AgriBusiness that has profit before anyone else, including taste. We've charted a new course to a new place. And we will probably regret that voyage.

Pennsylvanians are not bad people. They are not angry and bitter only, but angry and bitter in part. Bitter about constant progress never meeting them. Angry about politicians that will promise a world that won't be delivered. The average Pennsylvanian governs his or her own life with morality .. not vitriol. Policians in the state though pad their future pockets and pave their roads with gold.

I recently read an article documenting people in Northeast PA and how they are reacting to Obama vs Hillary. A retired worker at a restaurant was quoted saying, "I'm not crazy about voting for a colored guy, but that's not why I don't support Obama. I'm not prejudiced. I just like Hillary."

Perhaps the quote shows that Obama is right. Barack Obama's candidacy has opened a lot of cans that were sealed for decades. They have forced debates in friendships and families. It has forced many people to take a long hard look in the mirror. And an Obama presidency may be the healthiest thing ever for Pennsylvanians. Perhaps he can be the agent of change they look for.. Or he could be like the other agents of change. Promise it all and forget about everyone.

PROM NIGHT OPENING NIGHT

End of the year anxiety in high schoolers..?

PROM NIGHT succeeds in first night.. At number one at box office. Will most likely finish number 1 for the weekend with near $20 to 25 mil..

It's a bird!
It's a plane!?
No, it's a new American spy program!!

The Bush Administration's lame duck status continues to be refuted by its actions.. Now it's in the opening phases to use a new spy device..

More: The Bush Administration said that it plans to start using the nation's most advanced spy programs for domestic purposes soon. Democrats are worried about the legality of it. (*Democrats of course for political reasons, many other civil libertarians and conservatives can be included with that 'worried' group).

Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff said overhead sensor data will be used for law enforcement. After privacy and civil rights issues are taken into consideration.

The wedding bell blues: Random rakings from around the world

Just spoke to someone in the grocery store this morning hoping for a nice bright sunny day for their grandson getting married today. When I got home, rain started pouring. Here's hoping your grandson gets a break in the clouds and a streak of sunshine coming down.. My wedding weather turned out to be great. I can only hope that for everyone else..

But while the unnamed woman's grandson takes his vows, newsworthy events happening around the world as I FTP..

All the world is changing.. tomatoes don't have the same taste as years ago .. oranges aren't as juicy.. and now flowers don't have the same smell! A study suggests that pollution has destroyed the aroma from flowers.. Also a possible explanation of why bees are vanishing..

Can't imagine this being a surprise for anyone: Texas polygamous sect encouraged women to live in fear..

According to reports on the AP, Obama sees himself with a disadvantage in Pennsylvania and with an advantage in North Carolina. "So Indiana may end up being the tiebreaker," he said this week..

Obama losing hope in PA/while it polls rise? I don't understand his logic on this.

Catholic schools continue to close across America.. Just in time for Benedict's excellent American adventure.

POPE BENEDICT TO BROACH TERRORIST SUBJECT AT GROUND ZERO

Benedict at Ground Zero ..

Will pray for redemption of terrorists.

More

Pope Benedict will pray for "conversion to love "of those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred" when he visits the site where the World Trade Center towers were destroyed in 2001.

The Vatican released the prayer he will say in full:
"O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather today at this site, the scene of incredible violence and pain. We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died here -- the heroic first-responders: our fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001. We ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day, suffer from injuries and illness.
"Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope. We are mindful as well of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering. God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth.

"Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events.

"Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all."

Throw the poll out!

As polls numbers shift back and forth in Pennsylvania before the April 22 primary, reports surfaced today that Governor Ed Rendell received a phone call at his home last week.. from a pollster!

Rendell told the Harrisburg PATRIOT NEWS that it was the first time in his life he was polled.. When asked if the Rendell endorsement of Clinton had an effect on him, he said 'absolutely'.. He told the pollster that the Casey endorsement of Obama didn't phase him.

He said it was "funny"..

The 20th Century Boy's temper flare

Straight talk aside, revelations in a new book about John McCain are set to rock the 2008 presidential campaign..

Long heralded for his temper, the story in "THE REAL MCCAIN" goes far.

The book has a passage about Congressman Rick Renzi.. An instance when McCain become so angry that physical confrontation took place ..

Interestingly, the book reads that McCain became so impressed with the inability for the beat-ee to say sorry that they quickly became friends..

Rumors and gossip on the campaign trail.

It's not new for John McCain. Reporters in 2000 quietly talked about the maverick's unfortunate body odor issue.. No word on whether it continues to haunt "Stinky" in '08..

THE BEAT GOES ON: NO END IN SIGHT

General David Petraeus today appeared before the Foreign Relations committee to testify about the surge in Iraq and when troops may come home.

No answers.

Indefinite stay.

Maybe then. Maybe longer. A protester shouting "Bring them home" suddenly burst out in screams.. As he was taken from the Senate committee room, Carl Levin continued his questioning about when troops could come home. The heckler had a clear cut idea, Petraeus didn't.

The General won't promise any more troop cuts ..

Today, General Petraeus faced the next president of the United States. All three candidates questioned him.

The hearings appeared more to be a campaign event than one of true political or moral importance. With nothing decided, the candidates talk on .. And the General goes back to work. To war. Which goes on and on..
